The START (Serving, Thriving and Reading Together) Family Book Program is a 6-week reading and discussion program that encourages meaningful connections among military and civilian families. Family START is designed to maximize the potential for engaging with the humanities while addressing the challenges military families encounter, which include: isolation from the civilian community, family stress due to separation during deployment, the impact of deployment on children, and the destabilizing emotional and educational effects of frequent moves. This initiative is based on research that identifies reading as a tool for relieving stress among adults and children as well as studies that emphasize family reading as a way to help children cope with feelings of isolation and anxiety. 

Families who register will receive a kit that includes 9 picture books along with a discussion guide for parents and tips for engaging children in family reading. The theme of the series is "Stronger Together" and the books compiled focus on ideas about service, courage, resilience, and more. The books are on loan from the START program and must be returned. 

Kits will be available for pickup from Monday, March 8th through Sunday, March 14th at the Severn Library. Kits must be picked up from the Severn Library. Books must be returned to the Severn Library by Sunday, April 18th at the latest.

Both military and civilian families are welcome to register. One registration per family.
