Program Description

Event Details

The START (Serving, Thriving and Reading Together) Family Book Program is a reading and discussion program that encourages meaningful connections among military and civilian families. Family START helps families engage with the humanities while addressing the challenges military families experience. This initiative is based on research that identifies reading as a tool for relieving stress among adults and children as well as studies that emphasize family reading as a way to help children cope with feelings of isolation and anxiety.

Families who register will receive a set of picture books and a discussion guide for parents which includes tips for engaging children in family reading. The theme of the series is "The Ties That Bind" and the books compiled examine ideas about home, community, friendship, and trust.

Kits will be available for pickup from Monday, July 19 through Saturday, July 24 at the Severn Library. The books are on loan and must be returned to the Severn Library by Saturday, August 14.

Both military and civilian families are encouraged to register. One registration per family.

Hosted by the Severn Library in partnership with START and Blue Star Families.
